Tips to check Indonesian suppliers
1. Most genuine Indonesian companies in do not aggressively market their products through the internet. They are not on B2B portals and most SMEs don't even have websites. Many companies in smaller cities don't even use email. Large companies have websites, but they mostly function only to identify the company (e.g. they are seldom updated and often expired).
This is a weak point that scammers take advantage of. They use easily-found details about a real company including name, tax ID, certification no., address, contact person. Scammers will usually choose information from a small company, because choosing a big company is more easily noticed.
Scammers will then become free members of a B2B portal, with the real company’s details, but with different phone numbers. It's very easy to do. This way, they can even easily become TrustPass members with this trick.
2. Verify the company before you make a deal with them (e.g. sending samples or sending money). Visit http://www.kadin.or.id (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Indonesia) and enter the name of the company you'd like to verify. If you find them, carefully read the company details and directly contact the company by the telephone numbers you received from KADIN'S SITE. Do not use the phone number on the B2B portal.
3. Another possibility is to check if the phone number is a prepaid Indonesian CDMA numbers or a fixed phone line. The two numbers appear almost the same with the same area code.
To check, you can call +62-21-109, which is a service for checking phone bills. Fixed phone lines will always have billing details listed. Follow the instructions, there is English service available.
When asked to enter the area code and phone number to be checked, do not include the country code. e.g. Enter 0218888888. You'll then receive the phone bill details. All fixed phone lines will have billing details. If not, then it's a prepaid mobile number. This does not prove the person is a scammer, but would you like to deal with a person using a prepaid card they can easily throw away?
4. Remember that fixed phone lines are still not always safe. As in other countries, has many virtual offices for rent where you can pretend that you have a space in the building when you don't. In addition, there are a lot of public phones that can be rented for faxing, receiving and making calls
5. The Yellow Pages are not useful as the data has not been updated for a long time. You have to dial again and again every time you need somebody's contact number, even if you have the complete address. Company numbers are especially difficult as the yellow pages often give you an out-of-date phone number.
6. Having trusted contacts in is the best way to verify companies. Friends, colleagues, agents, brokers, lawyers, and virtual assistants can all help you verify companies.
