Hospitality Fair steals show at Aahar that has 30% more exhibitors
In his inaugural address, Sinha informed that the Ministry of Food Processing Industries has introduced a number of policy measures with a view to creating a conducive and enabling environment for the industry.
The secretary also informed that apart from providing useful schemes for state-of-the-art infrastructure for mega food parks, cold chains, abattoirs, the Ministry has set up the Indian Grape Processing Board, the National Meat and Poultry Processing Board and the Fish Development Council for overall development of these sectors and amplify export opportunities.
He informed that the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) would be an institute of global excellence addressing the entire issues of food science, technology, entrepreneurship and management of quality of street food aimed at safety.
In her welcome address, Dr Sheela Bhide, chairman and managing director, ITPO, informed the gathering that there is 30% increase in the number of exhibitors in Aahar, rising to 450 members, has led to bifurcation of Aahar into two fairs, Food India and Hospitality India. This is also a testimonial of importance of the fair in the face of economic slowdown and security concerns. She said the food and food processing industry had tremendous growth potential both in India and abroad and the upcoming Commonwealth Games would open up opportunities for the hospitality sector.
Dr Bhide said that the theme of the fair was Wines of India. She hoped alliances with Food Consultants Services International (FCSI) and the presence of John Radchenko would provide the edge to Indian industry, which is required in the competitive international market.
ITPO CMD also said that the Virtual Fair was a complementary to the exhibitors from ITPO side which can serve as a business impetus even after the fair ends.
Speaking on the occasion, John Radchenko, Worldwide President, Food Consultants Services International (FCSI), informed the gathering that FCSI has 14,000 members in 45 countries and their motto is to share, support and inspire the food industry while their concern is environment. He hoped that association with ITPO would lead to mutually beneficial developments.
A presentation was made by Japesh Thakur, general manager, SME Business Services Ltd. on the concept of Virtual Fair, which has been adopted by ITPO for Aahar 2009. Virtual Trade Fair is an online replication of the physical show, which helps exhibitors to have an online stall for a specified period.
High quality food and agricultural products from the US are on display at the Aahar 2009 food exhibition. The US Pavilion, inaugurated by US Charg 'd Affaires Steven J White, showcases a wide range of food offerings, including prunes, sweetened dried cranberries, pistachios, apples, and many consumer food products from the southern, mid-west and north-east states of the US.
"The participating US food companies are very pleased to be doing business in India and happy to partner with Indian distributors, supermarkets, food processors, hotels and restaurant industry groups," White said.
Among the leading US food industry groups participating in Aahar 2009 are California Prune Board, Food Export Association of the mid-west USA and Food Export USA north-east, Washington Apple Commission, Southern United States Trade Association, and the US Dairy Export Council.
