Biggest buyer of beans is China

China is the number one buyer of soybean exports. Because of this, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, along with others, will travel to China to talk to soybean buyers from Monday, March 23 through Friday, April 3.

The group includes Northey, Iowa Soybean Association president John Heisdorffer, ISA president-elect Delbert Christensen, ISA CEO Kirk Leads, ISA director of market development Grant Kimberly and representatives from AGP, a farmer-owned cooperative which operates nine soybean processing plants.

Southern China's economy is growing, including expanding livestock production, but has little soybean production. This is the area the group will be concentrating on. They will be in Shenzhen, which is near Hong Kong.

"Shenzhen is an interesting area," said Northey. He said it's just as many people would envision rural China, with small rice fields and people hand working the fields. "The cities are as modern as a city I've ever seen," said Northey. They have skyscrapers, wide boulevards, traffic jams, KFC and McDonald's.

Northey went to China in a group last year, and on this trip, they will be talking to the same people. On the last trip, the group visited hog farms. Northey said the newer ones look just like ours, but the older ones are smaller and have more hand labor. The hogs on these older farms are not as meaty as in the newer farms.

The group will visit four- five feed mills and production plants and meet with government officials, farmers and importers.

They will also spend two days in Taiwan talking to soybean and corn buyers.
