Besides mortgaging high-value properties, small scale gems & jewellery traders are also opting for securitisation of receivables and private equity deals to have access to adequate capital. Most companies in the industry now prefer to raise debt either by offering properties as security or through the securitisation route.
Small companies in the gems & jewellery sector are also considering other strategic measures to revive flagging sales in primary markets like the US and the Europe. The Indian jewellery sector is a leading foreign exchange earner, accounting for about 13.45 percent of the country's total exports. More than two-thirds of the gems & jewellery is exported to the US market.
In wake of the financial meltdown, small scale gems & jewellery units are consolidating their manufacturing units, and are also realigning their marketing and distribution strategies.
