Beading in High Fashion and Everyday Wear

Beads hold ancient roots, and their cultural significance can be traced to their early use in bartering. Beads served as a primitive currency, and they still retain their value today. In modern times they are found in the form of decoration as jewelry, rather than money.

In ancient days, people fashioned beads from a variety of materials. Early materials ranged from fish bones to teeth. As cultures grew increasingly sophisticated, so did the beads, techniques and materials with which they were created.

Today, beads are mostly used in jewelry making, textile embellishment and in the fashion industry. To yield a more "designer look," crafters often choose glass lamp-work beads over plastic buttons in garments. Costume jewelers and makers of "fine jewelry" utilize a diversity of beads, which vary in intricacy of design. This adds a look of quality and uniqueness to their work.

Fine jewelry houses predominantly use precious and semi-precious gemstone beads; the costume jewelry industry more often uses beads made of plastic, acrylic, wood and glass. Skilled artists can use the inherent versatility and wide range of designs, manipulating beads in many ways to create their pieces. Endless stringing combinations and a plethora of cuts and finishes ensures that beaded jewelry needs never look dull, boring or dated.

Recently, the home crafts market has seen an explosion in the use and sale of beads. For example, they used to serve exclusively as small, detailed embellishments for needle work projects. The last decade, however, has seen a surge of interest in beads. Accordingly, craft project hobbies (a.k.a. making classic jewelry, beaded candle holders, curtains, and wind charms) have also enjoyed increased popularity.

In fashion, there has been a resurgence of the "hippie Bohemian" look; people have consequently returned to using beads in the art of jewelry making. Beads have come to signify uniqueness in style and individual expression. They provide a new, modern look in fashion. In the 1970s, the public saw home made jewelry as a symbol of the "hippie" culture. Long strands of love beads were as interesting as things got. As the internet blazed into the forefront of popular culture in society, the jewelry making market saw direct impact. Now crafters may easily communicate with each other, sharing techniques and setting trends.

Ultimately, the bead charm bracelet is an example of how a classic, Bohemian theme can be applied to create a contemporary look. The charm bracelet made its first appearance in jewelry during the 1950s. It has remained popular ever since, but has been largely limited to classic jewelry lines in the form of precious metals.

The 1970s, for instance, witnessed resurgence in popularity of Bohemian culture in fashion. It empowered home jewelry makers to use their love of beads to update the classic look. Suddenly, charm bracelets with colorful glass beads were everywhere. One could see them on catwalks in high fashion, as well as on the streets. The home crafter could select from a large variety of beads to create his or her own style and unique fashion statement.

Styles come and go, but beads will always be in vogue. Whether you prefer an elegant, long string of pearls or a plastic stretchy bead bracelet, the bead is here to stay.

Fabric crafts:

How to sew beautiful accents and decorate your home using bed sheets. Including curtains, shower curtain valances and swags, pillow shams and more.

Our house is small and cozy. The living room is paneled with real pine tongue and groove, an effect that we love albeit dark. Dark that is unless you have large illuminating windows to brighten the room. We do not. Our living room windows are twenty-four inches across by fifteen inches long. They give one the feeling of peering through a porthole. For years we left these windows bare, staring at the cold and uninviting wood trim until I could take it no longer. I decided to make curtains for these windows, not for privacy (we could hardly see out of them, certainly no one could see in) but to try to soften the look, the decor of the room. If you are fortunate enough to have any talent and practice in purchasing fabric for an endeavor such as this you must know that materials can cost almost as much as buying curtains in the first place. Or, if you have windows similar to mine you will never find curtains that will fit. Fortunately, I am a pack rat. I save almost everything and will accept anything that anyone may want to give me always keeping in mind that it may have a future purpose. I was very fortunate – some time ago I had been given a large collection of various bed sheets from a family member. This is how I made curtains, not only for my living room but for my kitchen, bedroom and bathroom as well. I guess I got a bit carried away.

At this point I must stress that I really cannot sew. But, I was determined to do something practical – make curtains for these windows – and clean out my linen closet at the same time. Believe me, if I can do this, anyone can. I made my curtains using the simplest of stitches out of twin bed sheets. By following these simple directions, you too can achieve lovely window treatments at little or no cost as well.

Measure your window and decide what style curtain you want and how much of the window you want to cover.

Swag: Cut the sheet twice the width of the window plus one inch. This will allow you to gather the curtain along the rod and allows ½ inch on either end for your hem. I decided to get a little fancy as I wanted a swag tapered at the ends to fall over short, breezy panels. For the swag, cut the sheet to achieve the desired height plus three inches for the top and ½ inch for the bottom hem. Using my eye I brought the ends of the sheet down to a point for the tapered ends. (Keep in mind that since this will be gathered it does not have to be exact.) Stitch the top of the curtain first by folding down the three inches you allowed. Pin in place. Find the center of this flap you have folded down. It should be 1 ½ inches from both the top and bottom. Stitch along this line in a simple up and down motion from one side to the other. This will be the top ruffle. Next, stitch at the bottom of this fold. This is where the curtain rod will go. You have now completed the most difficult part of this project. To finish, simply measure, fold and stitch a ½ inch hem on the remaining sides and your valance is finished. To make panels, measure and cut the sheet to match twice the width of the window as well as the height desired. Remember to add ½ inch along the sides and bottom when cutting for you hem and allow 1 ½ inches at the top for your curtain rod.

Hourglass: Another very simple an attractive window treatment is a curtain made in an hourglass design. This curtain is a simple square or rectangle and can be done in no time at all. First, measure your window. Measure and cut your sheet 1 ½ times the width of your window. Cut the sheet the same length as your window plus 6 inches. 1 ½ inches for the rods at both the top and the bottom plus three inches to give you enough curtain to work with when gathering in the center. Fold and pin the material down 1 ½ inches from both the top and bottom. Stitch along this line. Fold and stitch ½ inch on either side for your hem and hang. To secure in the center you can use some additional sheet fabric to create a bow, or use your imagination. Pretty much anything can be used to compliment the curtain. I’ve even seen silk flowers used for a lovely garden effect.

Shower curtain valance: For my shower curtain valance I salvaged the remaining material from the sheet, cut a simple rectangle slightly longer than the shower and stitched my hem (the 1 ½ inches at the top was not necessary since I was not using a curtain rod). To hang I punched small holes along the top and pushed the shower curtain holders through. Pillow Shams: I love pillow shams. Those rufflely, soft pillow covers. Unfortunately, I don’t own any. I have simple standard pillow cases that on some occasions even match my sheets. So I made my own and guess what I used - SHEETS! Please note that these do not necessarily have to match the pillow cases but compliment them. Lay your pillow case flat and measure the four sides. Cut four “rectangles” from your sheet 1 ½ times the length of these sides, angling the edges (see illustration below) and six inches high. As with the curtains stitch a hem ½ inch on all sides. On the one side which will become the inside, the side you will attach to the pillow case, pull your stitches tight so that the material gathers until it is the length of the pillow case. Do this to all four ruffles and pin in place to make sure the fit is correct. Sew ruffles to the front of the pillow case. Remember to attach the ruffle to only the front of the opening of the case so that you can fit your pillow into it. Sew together the angles to connect the four ruffles together.

So far we have made curtains and pillow shams out of sheets. Continue to experiment on your own. Until now have you ever thought of doing anything with a sheet but make the bed? Play a little. Recover a pillow, make a linen tablecloth, the possibilities are endless.

You see, it’s really quite easy and can even be fun. Once you get the knack and those creative juices flowing you can turn pretty much anything into something new, special and exciting.

Study of consumer behavior and anomalies is the mainstay and a key to success in any business. For manufacturers, lot size reduction and reactivity are mandatory to swiftly respond to market demand so as to avoid unaffordable phase of stocking warehouses with products out of trend and un-carted.

Finger on market pulse and catering demand inconformity ‘was and is’ essential to succeed in corporate world, more so, to pull through this trying milieu.

People’s consuming behaviour is varying with time and recessionary upshots. “It has also changed fundamentally over the last fifty years. Thus, in many cases, clothing today is not primarily a vital commodity, but rather tends to be a substitute good,” acknowledges, Owner & CEO of OLYMP, Mr Mark Bezner in an interview with Face2Face team at fibre2fashion.

After pineapple and banana, fibre from water lily to grace textiles

Prior to the research and development of the water lily fibre by the Philippine R & D sector, it has done extensive studies and commercialized processes using fibres of abaca, pineapple and banana as raw materials for tropical fabrics.

Water lilies are favorable for use as home textile like curtains, upholstery, table runners, table napkins and handicrafts. But the donation from a Water lily Development Centre will go a long way in helping the marginalized citizens of Malabon city.

Recently, the Las Pinas Water Lily Weaving Center (LPWLWC) donated a water lily fibre extracting and drying machine to the Malabon city administration, which will now speed up the entire process of processing the water lily fibre to textile products.

Water lilies can be seen in large number in the aquatic areas in and around Malabon city and due to the fast growth of water lilies, the development of the sector around the flower can be conducted without any supply hindrance.

This machine is expected to help the poor artisans from the handicraft industry in particular, to produce handicraft items like bags, table runners, carpets and many other products which will help them sustain a decent livelihood.

Alibaba makes me reap harvests

Shenzhen Absen Industrial Co., Ltd. is a leading manufacturer in the field of LED display in china.

Since joining Alibaba.com, Absen has made more than RMB 100 million in export. It has a staff team of 400 persons. The products have been exported to more than 80 countries and regions. But at the beginning of co-operation with Alibaba in 2006, the figure was just one-tenth.

How to make the enormous success after the cooperation with Alibaba? Marketing manager in Absen, Ren Yonghong, gave us a brief answer on that.

1、Early birds catch the worms. Early in 2006, Absen had determined to create world-class brands in the LED display industry, at the same time, most enterprises were confined their products with domestic market. Absen had got help from Alibaba platform and explored a way to overseas markets. Well begun is half done.

2、Insisting input. Network input does not have a direct effect compared with show input. It should spend much time in testing the effect of Web Promotion. Up to now, Absen has gone through three years with Alibaba, and in 2007 received the honor of ten Net provider in the world, which also helped Absen with visibility. Thus, we achieved a win-win relationship with Alibaba.

3、Pay attention to Output-oriented effects. Because of many pre-investment, the acquired result is always ignored. Absen believes there can be no triumph without investment and input. We inputted 10 million in total, and the return is obvious.

Facing the financial storm, Absen has confidence in overcoming together with Alibaba and gave its power to promote the development of SME in China.

Daily worldwide cotton market report

Last night in New York futures market, May 2009 closed at 46.40 with a gain of 208 points, the July 09 closed at 47.20 with a gain of 191 points, while the October closed at 49.89 with a gain of 178 points. The A index declared settled at 53.05 with a gain of 120 points.

The spot rate of KCA declared settled at Rs. 3300/= as it was the other day with no changes today. In the domestic market today 2000 bales of Ghotki sold at Rs. 3400/=, 400 bales of Matli sold at Rs. 3300/=, 200 bales of Rasoolabad sold at
Rs. 3300/=, 400 bales of Sanghar sold at Rs. 3300/=, 400 bales of Shahdadpur changed hands at Rs. 3300/= and 1000 bales changed hands in Karachi at Rs.3300/=.

The March USDA planted acreage for cotton was slightly higher than anticipated, but still supportive at 8.811 million acres. Upland acreage was estimated at 8,668,000 acres verse 9.296 million acres last season. Pima acreage was 143.5 thousand acres verse 174.0 thousand acres last year.

ARK posted the largest decline vs. last season with a 37% reduction with Louisiana and Mississippi coming in record with a 20% to 22% decline respectively. The NCC estimated US plantings at 8.1 million acres in February.

The recovery in US equity markets today coupled with the sharp rally in the CNCE today more than offset the higher than expected US planting estimate. Futures posted a new 4 week high today reinforcing a higher near term price outlook. ICE futures should gain support from a bullish soybean planting estimate as well.

A bullish signal was given with an upside crossover of the daily Stock statistics. Studies are showing positive momentum but are now in overbought territory, so some caution is warranted. The market's close above the 9-day moving average suggests the short-term trend remains positive.

The outside day up and close above the previous day's high is a positive signal. With the close over the 1st swing resistance number, the market is in a moderately positive position.

Are the Fashion Police after You?

There are lots of different things that you should keep in mind when it comes to fashion. Sometimes, it is important to think about the way that you look and the way that others see you. It is important to look and feel your best so that you can continue to be successful in your life. In order to avoid being called in by the fashion police, there are a few tips that you can follow, and a few coupons that you can use to allow you to get great fashion at a fraction of the cost.

First of all, a good way to think about staying in fashion is just to pay attention to what people are wearing around you. Looking at the ads and finding coupons for great deals isn't going to help you unless you know what you want to look like. Look at the people who are around you each day and see what they are wearing, and the people you think look the best should have a great example of the fashion that you want to aspire to.

It doesn't take much to be in fashion. Something that you want to remember is a lot about fashion is simply being comfortable with who you are and being in clothing that is comfortable as well. You can do this easily, and you can allow yourself to have the pleasure of looking great while you do. It shouldn't be something that is hard, and with the right coupons, it doesn't need to be something that is expensive, either.

If you know the type of style you are looking for, then look through your wardrobe and see which things match that type of style, and which things are on the outs. If you find something that you know you never wear and is outdated, then replace that item with something that is newer and more in style. A good way to be sure that the fashion police aren't going to be knocking down your door is to get a general idea of the things that you look the best in, and then make sure that those things are found in your closet.

Buying great fashion shouldn't have to be that expensive either. The fashion police aren't going to be about making sure that you have the most expensive styles they'll just want to know that you look like you are in style. Finding great coupons allows you to buy great looking clothes from stores that you'd shop at normally, which means that you can get a great deal on something that you already know you love. With the right coupons in hand, you can avoid those fashion police and make absolutely sure that you look your best at all times. It isn't hard to make sure that you are in fashion, and if you need to, you can keep adding to your wardrobe as time goes on. Using coupons is a great way to allow you to be in style.

G20 Summit draft communique

LONDON, April 2 (Reuters) - G20 leaders of the world's largest developed and emerging economies are due to agree on Thursday to a major plan for restoring global growth and rebuilding a financial system, ravaged by the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.

Here are key points in the G20 communique draft, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters from delegation officials attending the summit.

1. Steps for restoring growth and jobs

- Fiscal Measures: The draft noted that "an unprecedented and concerted fiscal expansion" is underway but made no specific commitments for extra stimulus, beyond saying: "We are committed to deliver the scale of sustained effort necessary to restore growth."

The U.S., Britain and Japan had sought more government spending.

- Monetary and financial: Noted central banks have cut rate cuts aggressively, have pledged to undertake unconventional measures as long as needed, and that governments are supporting their banking systems -- all of which will help support a return to growth. "We are committed to take whatever action is necessary to achieve this outcome and we call on the IMF to assess the actions taken and the actions required."

- FX policies: "We will conduct all our economic policies cooperatively and responsibly with regard to the impact on other countries and will refrain from competitive devaluation of our currencies." They also commited to "candid, even-handed and independent" assessments by the IMF on these matters.

- Exit strategies: wary of inflationary concerns, they pledged to put in place credible exit strategies from the fiscal measures and support for the banking and financial sector.

2. Financial regulation:

- New Financial Stability Board with new powers to replace the Financial Stability Forum. It will work with the IMF "to identify and report on macroeconommic and financial risks and actions needed to address them".

- Financial markets: extend regulation or oversight to all market, instruments and major institutions. "This will include for the first time systemically important hedge funds."

- Pay: implement the FSF tough new principles on pay and compensation in significant financial institutions

- Tax havens: Vowed to identify locations that are failing to cooperate, including tax havens, and to use sanctions against them.

- Accounting standards: work urgently on improving valuation of assets, provisions against losses, and one set of high-quality global standards

- Credit ratings agencies: to register and be regulated

3. Global financial institutions:

- IMF: agreed to make additional resources available to the IMF through temporary funding from member countries, but no figures were included in the draft. It also said that it would support a general Special Drawing Rights allocation to inject money into the world economy. Figures were omitted.

- Emerging economies must have a greater voice and votes on international financial institutions by January 2011.

4. Protectionism, global trade, climate change:

- Extended for 12 months pledges made last November not to raise new trade barriers and rectify promptly any such measures

- World Trade Organisation to report quarterly on any measures that do or could cause trade distortions

- Trade finance expanded. No sum included

- Use fiscal stimulus funds to invest in green technologies and reaffirm pledge to reaching a climate change accord at the Copenhagen summit in December. (Editing by Mike Peacock)

10th LFW finale winds up with Anamika's Bridal Sutra Collection

The venue of the Grand Finale of the Fall/Winter 2009 Lakme Fashion Week at the Grand Hyatt was turned into a beautiful temple with hundreds of metres of fabrics and floral bells suspended from the ceiling with abstract branches curving on the wall. The ramp was edged with hundreds of lamps and as temple bells chimed the fashion extravaganza began.

Anamika Khanna the darling of Kolkata couture and the lady who has made waves on the international fashion scene, presented one of the most stunning collections seen on the ramp at the Grand Finale at Lakme Fashion Week, inspired by the Bridal Sutra collection specially created by Lakme for Summer 2009.

The Lakmé Bridal Sutra Summer 2009 collection has a weightless foundation that blends into the skin rendering a naturally beautiful and radiant finish. The blusher is a pure pressed powder that provides sheer, lightweight application. A revolutionary new product – the cheek and lip tint adds a pop of colour to your cheeks and lips giving a freshly flushed look.

The lip colour range is enriched with super rich moisturizers combined with silky matte textures. For defining your lips, there is the glide on lip pencil that glides on smoothly and stays creamy. A unique foam tip liner – the Eye Artist helps outline, define and intensify your eyes in one easy stroke.

Anamika’s collection divided into a three part bridal wear story had all the typical creative touches that the designer is renowned for in her fusion look with large doses of ethnic elements. Matching the soft delicate sensual colours of the Lakme Bridal Sutra Summer 2009 line, the collection followed the palette for the season.

The Pastel Collection was a dream in shades of coral, salmon, and pink, peach which were entrancingly designed into the most delicate garments. The Prints line was a riot of colours and patterns and the soft white and crèmes were a dream to behold. Anamika’s detailing took an unconventional turn as she knotted the sides of the ensembles or dupattas to create asymmetric lines.

Floral embroidery, trellis work, tiny digital Rajput figurines for prints on silk, antique zardosi and pearls embellished the creations. The fabrics were summery and fluid with chiffon, cotton and the shimmer of lamé adding to the very feminine look.

The silhouettes were soft and swirled around the models as they glided down the ramp. Gorgeous kurtas with shimmering gold borders, Saris with embroidered edges or red and gold borders, Gold polka dots on ecru saris, lots of tiny gold buttees, drapes for luxurious kurtas, salwars had volume and pants were crushed and crinkled for comfort.

Sheer net floated for lehenga over black or red churidars while net cholis had visible shoulder pads and worn over black bustiers.

The grandeur of the all net panelled lehenga over churidars, saris worn short but with cigarette pants or churidars, flowing kaftans were how Anamika visualizedbridal wear for Summer 2009. There was grandeur and style all rolled into one for a superb bridal collection with distinct touches of Bengal.

The finale was the graceful appearance of the three Lakme faces - Indrani Dasgupta in a majestic red long gown covered with gold work, Amrit Magera in a red and cream draped embroidered kurta and Vipasha Agarwal in a grand ornate lehenga, choli and dupatta.

The Anamika Khanna brilliant show for Lakme Bridal Sutra summer 2009 made a glittering impact and was the most awaited event of the Fall/Winter 2009 Lakme Fashion Week.

Everybody likes to present themselves in a unique form. They have their own style. Clothing and jewellery are the two best ways to present oneself. An elegant pearl piece looks gorgeous on anyone irrespective to look, height and figure. Pearl jewellery acts as a very flexible wearing in the wardrobe.

Wearing clothes are bounded with a number of rules as one has to consider the garment, the place, color of the dress according to the skin tone etc. But wearing jewellery is bound with no rules. A simple pearl beaded necklace looks elegant on any type of event and different costumes. Jewellery adds to the way that you dress. It gives a complete look. The craze of pearls is seen even today. Pearls look great in any form. It may be ring, necklace, anklets or bangles. Fashion of wearing pearls is never out. It is an evergreen material and can be adorned any time round the year.

A pearl enriches one's beauty with gold, silver and white polish. Even if accompanied with diamond or any other kind of gem it is able to maintain its charm. Pearls are available with the wide variety. There are plenty of sizes and colors in pearl. The shapes in which pearls are generally seen are round, square, button, drop, oval etc. Round pearls are difficult to find, but they give a great look when adorned in a piece of jewellry. Pearls also are available in a variety of lengths such as collar which is 10 to 13 inches long, choker which is 16 to 18 inches long, princess which is 17 to 20 inches long etc.

Pearls are made naturally or cultivated. Now days they have been cultivated in a number of countries. Natural pearls are quite expensive but cultured once are at affordable rates. Cultivated pearls can either be made of fresh water or salt water. There are three types of salt water pearls- the Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian. Mikimoto ranges highest in the quality, Akoya is white, silver or cream in color and others are of darker shade. These pearls are valuable than the fresh water pearls. Pearl jewellery may cost more than diamond jewellery. It is life time treasure which can be passed from generation to generation.

It is very important to choose the right kind of pearl. Some important observances should be kept in mind while purchasing it. Luster of the pearl is the most important point which has to be focused on. The quality of the pearl can be judged by the kind the luster it has. One should be able to see the reflection on the pearl. The surface of the pearl should not be with any kind of unevenness, spots etc. To get the idea of the thickness one can rub the pearl on the teeth. If there is a rough feel it has good thickness.

It is recommended that the young should prefer wearing a small piece of pearl to give a delicate look. The older ones can prefer long sized pearl to enhance their personality.

How to Create a Marketing Plan - Alibaba Entrepreneur

Firms that are successful in marketing invariably start with a marketing plan. Large companies have plans with hundreds of pages; small companies can get by with a half-dozen sheets. Put your marketing plan in a three-ring binder. Refer to it at least quarterly, but better yet monthly. Leave a tab for putting in monthly reports on sales/manufacturing; this will allow you to track performance as you follow the plan.

The plan should cover one year. For small companies, this is often the best way to think about marketing. Things change, people leave, markets evolve, customers come and go. Later on we suggest creating a section of your plan that addresses the medium-term future--two to four years down the road. But the bulk of your plan should focus on the coming year.

You should allow yourself a couple of months to write the plan, even if it's only a few pages long. Developing the plan is the "heavy lifting" of marketing. While executing the plan has its challenges, deciding what to do and how to do it is marketing's greatest challenge. Most marketing plans kick off with the first of the year or with the opening of your fiscal year if it's different.

Who should see your plan? All the players in the company. Firms typically keep their marketing plans very, very private for one of two very different reasons: Either they're too skimpy and management would be embarrassed to have them see the light of day, or they're solid and packed with information . . . which would make them extremely valuable to the competition.

You can't do a marketing plan without getting many people involved. No matter what your size, get feedback from all parts of your company: finance, manufacturing, personnel, supply and so on--in addition to marketing itself. This is especially important because it will take all aspects of your company to make your marketing plan work. Your key people can provide realistic input on what's achievable and how your goals can be reached, and they can share any insights they have on any potential, as-yet-unrealized marketing opportunities, adding another dimension to your plan. If you're essentially a one-person management operation, you'll have to wear all your hats at one time--but at least the meetings will be short!

What's the relationship between your marketing plan and your business plan or vision statement? Your business plan spells out what your business is about--what you do and don't do, and what your ultimate goals are. It encompasses more than marketing; it can include discussions of locations, staffing, financing, strategic alliances and so on. It includes "the vision thing," the resounding words that spell out the glorious purpose of your company in stirring language. Your business plan is the U.S. Constitution of your business: If you want to do something that's outside the business plan, you need to either change your mind or change the plan. Your company's business plan provides the environment in which your marketing plan must flourish. The two documents must be consistent.
